CHROMOSTEREOPSIS

Chromostereopsis is a visual illusion that occurs when blue and red components appear close to each other in an image. A black or dark component helps to amplify the illusion. Fractals are an easy medium for creating such images when a suitable colour palette is applied.

Pure red & blue produce the strongest effect but any shades that are based on these two colours can still work but the illusion is more subtle.

Red & blue are at both extremes of the visible spectrum and therefore exhibit the greatest differential in wavelength. The eye sees this as a slight difference in focus though some people see the effect more easily than others.

Awareness of this illusion has grown with the use of computer screens that make it more obvious. I first noticed it by chance when creating fractals and became fascinated to the point of producing the images that appear on this blog.
